GM Valery Salov turns 61 today. Born in Wrocław, Poland, he became World U16 Champion in 1980 and climbed the rankings to reach world number three in 1995—behind only Kasparov and Karpov, and ahead of Kramnik, Anand, and Ivanchuk.
