The game between Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Jan-Krzysztof Duda bore definite similarities to their encounter of the day before. Black treated the opening rather passively and White obtained a large space advantage. The critical moment occurred when the Azeri decided to bring his knight to c6, thus forcing his opponent to exchange it. A far-advanced passed pawn appeared on this square that looked like a thorn in black’s position. But Duda defended resourcefully, first by solidly blockading this pawn, then by pushing his own pawns on the queenside. As he admitted after the game, he was relieved to finally play some active moves and understood that his position was in fact quite resilient. After some more attempts, a visibly disappointed Mamedyarov offered a draw. In the post-match interview, Duda felt that his chances were probably higher at rapid and blitz than in classical. The tie-break is likely to be heated.

Arcymistrz Jan Krzysztof Duda: „Na najwyższym poziomie zawodnicy trenują głównie debiuty; szukają nowych idei, aby zaskoczyć przeciwnika”! (TVN 2018)

Oczywiście otwarciami trzeba zająć się już długo wcześniej, aby po osiągnięciu pewnej klasy gry i ambitnych planów sportowych mieć ogólne pojęcie o teorii debiutów oraz posiadać już przygotowany solidny repertuar debiutowy.

To jest podstawa współczesnych szachów!

Radosław Wojtaszek oraz Jan Krzysztof Duda wcześnie zajęli się debiutami i widać tego efekty: obaj są w czołówce światowej.

Także w Niemczech zrozumiano wreszcie istotne znaczenie początkowej fazy gry w procesie szkolenia młodzieży. Pisałem już na blogu, że w programach szkoleniowych mocno uwypukla się tę kwestię. Także wzmocniono działalność w zakresie publikacji wszelkich materiałów fachowych.

Firma ChessBase w Hamburgu specjalizuje się wydawaniem książek elektronicznych w zakresie otwarć dla zaawansowanych, natomiast wydawnictwo Joachim Beyer Verlag wydaje podobne podręczniki w formie papierowej dla szachistów na poziomie do około I kategorii lub kandydata na mistrza. W tym programie biorę aktywny udział.

Do tej pory ukazały się trzy tematyczne książki, które zawierają przede wszystkim dużo opisów i tylko potrzebne warianty w celu zrozumienia istoty danego otwarcia:

Wszystkie te książki ukazały się także w wersjach angielskich.

Following the fascinating tie-breakers on Sunday, the FIDE Grand Prix organized by World Chess proceeds to the second round. The symbolic first move to open the playing day was made by Dana Reizniece-Ozola, Minister of Economy of Latvia from 2014 till 2016 and Minister of Finance from 2016 until 2019. Well-known in the chess world as a Woman Grand Master and long-time leader of her national team, Mrs. Reizniece-Ozola played 1.Nf3 in the match Duda – Mamedyarov, as instructed by the Polish champion. This game took on a closed character when pawns started blocking each other on the queenside and in the centre. Thanks to his space advantage in these areas, Jan-Krzysztof Duda reached a pleasant position, but Shakhriyar Mamedyarov played the timely 17…f4 to make sure that he would always have chances for counter-play. Both players agreed afterwards that white’s advantage was probably less serious than what the computer usually suggests in this type of positions. In any case, Duda did not see a plan to improve his position and offered a draw on move 34.

The young Jan-Krzysztof Duda managed to knock out Petr Svidler. The Russian praised his opponent in the post-match interview, saying that he had fully deserved victory on this day. “I thought that my chances were favourable in the first game, but Jan-Krzysztof understood the position much better. I even had to be careful”. After this draw, Duda took the initiative early on in the second rapid game and broke his opponent’s resistance in the endgame.
